The Brief Origins of May Day | Industrial Workers of the World|International Workers’ Day

1st of May is observed as May Day worldwide to commemorate the struggle and sacrifices of the workers to establish an eight-hour workday. It is also a public holiday.

Because of the Industrial Revolution, the workers had to work a long shift. On May 1, 1886, they went on strike demanding an eight-hour workday. The labour leaders inspired the workers to stand together against their bosses.

However, the police fired at them and a striker died instantly. Many more were injured. These events remind us that workers will continue to be exploited until they stand up together and speak out their rights.
